In the latest year (2022), the Intensification of Rabies Control Program of the Office of the City Veterinarian has proven its effectiveness in repressing the Animal Rabies cases in Davao City. The four (4) components of the program, namely: Impounding, Neutering, Vaccination, and Information Education Campaign (IEC), with diligent attention to the Promotion of Responsible Pet Ownership (RPO).
Eradicating rabies by controlling the dog and cat population in the most humane way possible is neutering. By sterilizing dogs and cats, pet owners will do their part to prevent the birth of unwanted puppies and kittens. Neutering and spaying prevent unwanted litter, help protect pets against some serious health problems and may reduce many of the behavioral problems associated with mating instincts and eventually control the spread of rabies. Limiting the dog and cat population does not only help lessen the occurrence of rabies transmission but also eases the target required for optimal rabies vaccination coverage. One of the humane approaches in controlling the dog and cat population is only through sterilization methods such as Castration.
City Veterinarian’s Office (CVO) targets to castrate 7000 heads of dogs and cats until first quarter of the calendar year 2023. Since January up to July of the current year, there were 37 out of 182 barangays that were provided with free pet castration services . A total of 2,936 heads were castrated; 1,658 dogs and 1,278 cats, with 2,121 clients served. Through the office of the City Government of Davao, the Intensification of Rabies Control is still an ongoing activity/ program gearing its goal to a RABIES FREE DAVAO CITY.
