One of the most humane way possible to achieve a rabies free community is by neutering. Everyone, especially pet owners, can be able to take part in achieving this goal by having their dogs and cats sterilized in order to prevent the birth of unwanted puppies and kittens. Preventing unwanted litters through spay and neuter can help protect pets against some serious problems and may reduce many of the behavioral problems associated with mating instinct which will eventually lead to the control of the spread of rabies.
Castration is one of the yearly activities conducted by the City Veterinarian’s Office. Before the year ends, many of the pet owners in Davao City are taking the responsible route of having their pets castrated. For the month of December, a total of three (3) barangays were able to request and avail the free dog and cat neutering service of the Office of the City Veterinarian. Those requesting barangays are Brgy. Acacia in Buhangin District, Brgy. San Antonio in Agdao District and Brgy. Lasang in Bunawan District. A total of 82 clients were served and 109 cats and dogs were castrated. For the year 2020, a total of 753 cats and dogs were neutered serving 573 pet owners.
The danger posed by Covid19 throughout the year will not hinder the brave front liners of the Office of the City Veterinarian in achieving the goal of rabies free Davao City through dog and cat population control. Despite the pandemic, the office was able to reach the target number of castrated pets for 2020 with the overwhelming cooperation of our pet owners in Davao City.
