The City Government of Davao through the City Veterinarian’s Office launched a crisis intervention program entitled “Tabang sa Industriya sa Panghayupan” to mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in the city. This program involves buying the commodities of livestock, poultry and dairy farmer producers of Davao City amounting to Php 5,500,650.00. These farm produce which includes pork, dressed chicken, egg and freshmilk are included in the food ration currently being distributed to affected residents all over the city.
The objectives of this project are to give marketing assistance to the raiser/farmer to ensure the sustainability of farm operation as well as provide the vulnerable population such as children, pregnant women and the elderly with nutritious diet amidst the public health emergency community quarantine of the city.
Davao City is sufficiently secured with meat and poultry commodities produced by local farms and has a thriving dairy industry, however, the distribution chain is disintegrated due to the mobility restriction brought about by the community quarantine which cut down the sales and demand of these commodities. The food distributors, wholesalers and retailers are affected in the temporary shutting down of hotels, resorts, tourist establishments, event caterers and “carenderia”. Restaurants, fast food and the like are also slowing down because it only accommodate “take out orders” which are not many. This destabilizes the demand and supply equilibrium, which this program aims to address.
On the other hand, kind hearted benefactors are donating pork meat and dressed chickens, oil, and salt that are also included in the food ration and distributed by the office personnel in various barangays. The spirit of “Bayanihan to Heal As One” is going strong among Davaoweños as food donations came pouring in and more relief are still coming from sponsors as scheduled on the office’s delivery time table. As of May 16, 2020, the City Veterinarian’s Office distributed the following commodities to the different barangays: 30,452 kilos pork, 40,481 pieces or 60,687.90 kilos dressed chickens; 2,090 kilos Tilapia Fish; 564 trays or 16,920 pieces chicken eggs; 1,000 pieces duck eggs; 13,340 liters freshmilk; 2,213 liters cooking oil; and 298 sacks salt (50 kilos per sack).
